Finland Finalizes Second Phase of Russia Border Barrier
The latest completed section spans roughly 18 kilometers across eight segments in the north-central Kainuu region, according to the media outlet. This addition follows the initial 35-kilometer stretch already in place.
Originally approved by Finland's parliament in 2022, the border fence is set to eventually cover about 200 kilometers of the nation’s 1,300-kilometer boundary with Russia. Construction began in 2023, with each portion featuring a steel mesh fence, a buffer zone cleared of vegetation, a service road, and an integrated technical monitoring system.
The newly added Kainuu segment includes several technological advancements over the pilot fence built near Imatra in the southeast. These upgrades, as detailed by the media outlet, feature an artificial intelligence-powered surveillance system that can differentiate humans from animals to minimize false alerts. Additionally, a loudspeaker system has been installed, allowing authorities to communicate remotely with individuals near the barrier.
Since December 2023, all land border crossings between Finland and Russia have remained closed following a series of government rulings.
The prolonged closure has sparked criticism at home. Detractors argue the move could breach international agreements, while some Finnish citizens with familial connections in Russia have voiced frustration over disruptions to long-established cross-border visits.
